Thirst 5% off discountable items Life’s a Beach but We Need You at the Co-opby Renée Bergan, Vice President and DK Holland, Board Member It’s summer time, and the beach beckons... but with that comes a lull in sales and open work shifts at the Co-op. We’ve made huge improvements on our members’ shopping experience, such as the new fridges, Sunday shopping hours, and soon we’ll have a new point of sales system that will help you check out more quickly. But improvements require cash and labor. This is where you come in! The summer lull in sales and members that don’t show up for their shift affects our store operations tremendously. But you can easily change that. If all our active members spent only $20/more a month, we could make even more improvements towards a better store and shopping experience for all members. So don’t forget to shop! And don’t forget to do your work shift either! The rewards are enormous: here’s to awesome savings, great food and good community! Accessible Community Yoga

In December 2011, Greene Hill Food Co-op member Gwendolyn Beetham, and friend to the Co-op (and member of the Park Slope Food Coop!) Christina Ferwerda started Free School Yoga. The collaborative project was born out of their love of practice and desire to share it with their friends and neighbors in Clinton Hill. Guided by this love for the community and the belief that yoga should be accessible to everyone, they offered their weekly classes on a sliding-scale. Today, Gwendolyn, Christina, and fellow teacher Heather Morowitz continue to offer yoga classes in the community, together with occasional workshops on nutrition and Ayurvedic principles run by a certified holistic health counselor. Weekly Free School Yoga classes take place on Sundays at the Brooklyn Free School (Clinton Avenue between Greene Avenue and Lafayette) and are open to all, regardless of experience. Students include advanced yogis, beginners, new and expectant parents, those working with injuries, and those who are looking to exercise both their body and mind. The teachers are available to schedule affordable private sessions and other wellness services, such as Thai massage and nutrition counseling. This August, they are offering their first weekend retreat at Bethel Farm Yoga & Living Art Center in New Hampshire. Being active in the community is an important part of Free School Yoga's mission, and they have partnered with local businesses and organizations, including the Brooklyn Free School, Brooklyn Public Library (Clinton Hill Branch), Clifton Place Community Garden, Early Life Early Childhood Education, and...the Greene Hill Food Co-op! If you see Gwendolyn shopping or working (she's a member of the Finance Committee), feel free to get in touch and ask her more. You can also visit the Free School Yoga website at freeschoolyoga.com, or find them on Facebook. |
Product Spotlight: Nut Butters
Credit: onceagainnutbutter.com
One of our most popular categories at the Co-op is nut butters. From big-business Smuckers to the more local Once Again and the unconventional Justin’s (to name just a few), we stock a variety of brands and types. Nut butters are an excellent source of protein and energy, great for cheap and easy lunches and snacks, as well as some tasty recipes (try this one for African groundnut stew, or this one for sesame noodles). Smuckers natural peanut butters are friendly to your wallet and they’re made of just peanuts and salt. Some people prefer creamy, but the crunchy is our best seller by far. Once Again nut butters fly off our shelves. Like us, they’re an employee-owned, democratically run company, and since 1976 they’ve been making GMO-free, organic almond, cashew, and sunflower butter, as well as sesame tahini in rural Nunda, NY. For something a little more unusual, we also stock Justin’s, which is produced in Colorado. Founder Justin Gold started small, selling his home-blended nut butters at the Boulder, CO farmer’s market, but eventually went national. Justin’s makes peanut butter, sure, but that’s not all: our most popular Justin’s product is the chocolate hazelnut butter, which is creamy, chocolatey, and just plain delicious. You can also check out the Justin’s peanut butter cups just above the cookies if you want even more peanutty goodness. |

Please make sure to review the tabling instructions and contact Juliana at tabling@greenehillfood.coop before embarking on your shift. We also need canvassers to help spread the word about the Co-op! This is a great job for those of you who want to work on a flexible schedule, take strolls around the neighborhood, and love to talk with people. Canvassers pick an area and drop off promotional material at restaurants, stores, churches, apartment buildings (with their approval) and to passers-by on the streets. This role sometimes includes working with the Education Committee to coordinate food demos at these events.
