Tahini Matcha Latte
By Emily Nachazel
Have you tried matcha yet? Matcha tea is made from finely ground green tea leaves so you get all of the benefits of green tea, and clear, focused energy. While it does contain caffeine (about half the amount of black coffee), it is also rich in the amino acid L-theanine, which promotes a state of relaxation and well-being. It creates alpha waves in the brain, which leads to a state of calm alertness.
Some other benefits of matcha include:
Boosted memory and concentration. Another side-effect of L-theanine is the production of dopamine and serotonin. These two chemicals enhance mood, improve memory, and promote better concentration.
A stronger immune system and better overall health. Matcha is high in antioxidants, the magical nutrients that give us younger-looking skin, fight inflammation, and prevent a number of serious chronic illnesses. Matcha contains one specific antioxidant called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCg), which is widely recognized for its cancer fighting properties.
Detox. Matcha is also a powerful detoxifier, due to its high levels of chlorophyll, and is capable of naturally removing heavy metals and chemical toxins from the body.
Increased endurance. Matcha gives you a steady boost of energy, which can last for up to 6 hours!
Oh, and did I mention it makes for a beautiful photo?? The vibrant green color is hard not to love!
For these reasons, matcha is becoming a popular (and often quite pricey) barista beverage, which is why I prefer to make my matcha drinks at home. The key with matcha is buying from a quality source, as your drink will only be as delicious as the matcha you use. We carry Harney & Sons matcha in the bulk section at the Co-op, which is perfectly balanced and tasty! And because it’s in bulk ($36.40/lb or $2.28/oz), it’s way more affordable and more eco-friendly than most other matcha options — without sacrificing quality.
Traditionally, you use a bamboo whisk to mix matcha with hot water for a naturally frothy drink, but this recipe opts for a blender instead. Tahini and coconut oil help slow the absorption of caffeine into your system and fuel your brain with the healthy fats it needs to function optimally. Feel free to switch up the superfood add-ins or omit them altogether. Use this recipe as a template and make it your own!
Ingredients:
1 t tahini
1 t coconut oil
1 t matcha
Sprinkle of cinnamon
1/2 t vanilla
Pinch sea salt
1 scoop collagen peptides (optional)
1 pitted date or honey for sweetness (optional)
¼ - ½ t superfood add-ins like ashwagandha, maca or reishi powder (optional)
Directions: Blend all ingredients with one and one-half to two cups hot (not boiled) water in a high-speed blender until frothy! Enjoy!
